Product Development in China & Taiwan

Titoma is founded on the principle of Design For Asian Manufacturing (DFAM) which holds that any mass-produced electronic product can only reach its full profit potential when the development fully takes into account the cost-down particularities of China manufacturing, right from the start. Thus, instead of moving a product to China after three-quarters of the product development has been done in the West, it is more sensible and cost-effective to beat the competition by getting the edge on them first, before they get the edge on you. It obviously makes sense to do the product development as close as possible to the manufacturing, and now Titoma makes it possible to entrust your development project to professional Western management, on-site in Taiwan or China. History
In the many years that Case Engelen and his colleagues had been working in product development in Taiwan they had become acutely aware of the gap between Western design and Asian manufacturing.
Western product development firms are often more motivated by cool design rather than by sales success, in which they normally have no commercial interest. They typically accept no responsibility for manufacturing implementation. If you add an ocean and a number of time-zones the "throw-it-over-the-wall" mentality is hard to avoid, and many great designs from Western ID firms sadly never make it to market because they are not compatible with China's manufacturing methods.
As manager of his previous firm, WeLL Design Taiwan, Titoma's President Case Engelen worked to close this gap and hired Western designers and engineers to work in Taiwan so that they could communicate directly with the local engineers, toolmakers and manufacturers. This approach was very successful, winning the "Best of Comdex" award in '99 for an innovative portable PC tablet (Sony and Ericsson came in 2nd and 3rd).
Still, something always seemed to be missing. In his role of product development consultant he would not have any control over toolmakers, electronics developers and manufacturers, and the quality of the final product would often suffer as a result.
To successfully convert a new product development idea into a sales success a great number of factors all have to come together. If one slips, all the effort put in might be wasted. That's why an integrated approach was needed, and why Titoma and its Design For Asian Manufacturing credo were founded.
Fast and successful new product development requires many activities to run concurrently. Coordinating all this is no easy task, and best done locally, so people designers, engineers, toolmakers and suppliers can meet and discuss face to face.
Most projects are multi-disciplinary, but it's hard to find a person who is an ace at tooling and thermo and PCB layout. Our Project Managers - PM's - are supported by a wide network of top-level experts in every field. Experts that are here, every day; you don't have to fly them in.
Our Western PM's are fluent in both English and Chinese, and have extensive experience in international collaboration by means of E-mail, file exchange etc, so that smooth communication is guaranteed.
